Performance Management Playlist

Dec 04, 2010

In a recent performance management workshop for supervisors and managers, participants were asked to consider the following question: If your life had a soundtrack, what music would be playing when you are engaged in performance management.

The answers were fun, humourous, and enlightening. The nominations included songs like:

  • Theme from Rocky
  • Eye of the Tiger
  • Here We Go Again
  • Stayin’ Alive
  • Allegria
  • Mamma Mia
  • Dancing Queen
  • Don’t Stop Me Now

Most of these tunes would be great for a cardio workout. All but one of these tunes have a strong, driving tempo; several have an aggressive, feisty theme. If this is the type of music we associate with the function of performance management, it is no wonder that supervisors and employees find performance management stressful and unsustainable. The playlist suggests that, like an aerobic workout, we can get ourselves psyched to ‘do’ performance management on occasion. And yet performance management is not an episodic task. It is the inherent function of supervision. To be sustainable, performance management needs to be more like yoga — a sustainable, consistent practice that enhances performance, stretches abilities and improves flexibility.

Is it time to create a new performance management playlist?
